Sustainability as a tool for a healthy home
Sustainability as a tool for a healthy home
Our five principles
Energy efficient & orientation based design
Our designs are energy efficient, not only through the use of the latest techniques (heat pumps, heat exchangers, solar panels and insulation materials with high insulation values), but also by optimally orienting the building towards or away from the sun. As an example, we situate window openings in such a way that direct sunlight does not heat up the building too much in summer, but it does in winter. We integrate these solutions in such a way that they become part of the design instead of an unesthetical addition.
Renewable materials
In our designs we use biobased materials, which are materials that come from renewable sources and have a low environmental impact. Examples are wood, bamboo, hemp insulation, clay plaster and natural paint. Those materials are not only sustainable but also provide a healthy indoor climate without toxins. Preferably, the materials used are harvested locally so that transport minimalized.
Quality materials & durable details
We use high-quality, long-lasting and beautifully aging materials (durability) and develop high-quality details to ensure that the designs can survive the ravages of time (longevity). Examples of these materials are strong so called 'through-and-through' materials such as solid wood: even if little a dent appears in it or a piece breaks off, the object is not broken.
Use the existing
In renovation projects, initially we focus on existing qualities and reuse the good, existing materials as much as possible. Sometimes these are authentic ornaments, in other cases existing bricks, beautiful wooden beams or the original doors.
Climate Adaptive & Nature Inclusive
In a country subject to climate change (rising temperatures, heavier rains, decline in flora&fauna), we choose to see building not only as an encroachment on nature, but rather as an opportunity to enhance nature. Rain buffers in the form of green roofs or water tanks ensure that the building can stay cooler in summer or that water can be stored in winter for use in the summer to water plants. Bird nests and insect boxes in the facades ensure that the local biodiversity is supported. These interventions are designed as part of a whole so that they add beauty and character to the building.
We realize sustainable projects not only in Amsterdam, but throughout the Netherlands. In Oosterwold, where future residents themselves organize the division of plots and the construction of roads, we have realized several sustainable detached new homes. We are also working in several cities in North Holland on sustainable renovations and extensions of existing properties that need to be given new life. But also in other locations in the Netherlands we can help you with your sustainable dream home!
